Average fuel economy for new cars increased in 2011

With the United States moving toward new fuel-efficiency standards in coming years, those looking for auto loans should focus on getting the most for their money when it comes to fuel efficiency. TrueCar.com recently released its TrueMPG report, which said people may have an easier time being fuel conscious this year.

Over the year, fuel efficiency increased to 22.2 miles per gallon from 21.7 mpg in 2010. December's light vehicle auto sales show that TrueMPG decreased slightly from November to 22.3 mpg, but the higher amount of efficiency seems to be a good sign going forward.

"Automakers understand that fuel economy is an important value proposition for consumers," said Jesse Toprak, vice president of industry trends and insights at TrueCar.com. "It may seem insignificant, but an increase of a half a mile per gallon in fuel economy translates to a reduction in fuel consumption of 214 million gallons, or a savings of about $722 million in fuel annually in the U.S."

FuelEconomy.gov said the most fuel-efficient midsize car is the Nissan Leaf and the most fuel-efficient compact is the Chrevolet Volt. The least fuel-efficient compact is the Bentley Continental GT and the least fuel-efficient midsize car is the Bentley Mulsanne. Those looking for bad credit auto finance should avoid Bentleys either way and focus on fuel economy.
