Feds propose national guidelines for new car technologies

As more and more local governments pass "distracted driving" laws, the federal government announced February 16 that it will be tossing its hat into the regulatory ring.

The Department of Transportation has proposed federal guidelines for automakers to reduce the amount of potentially distracting technology in new cars. The guidelines are voluntary, and would cover any electronic devices that "require visual or manual operation by drivers," according to the DOT. This includes extra car features like dashboard communications devices or navigation systems that people applying for car credit often look for in a new car purchase – which federal officials acknowledged.

"We recognize that vehicle manufacturers want to build vehicles that include the tools and conveniences expected by today's American drivers," said David Strickland, administrator of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. "The guidelines we're proposing would offer real-world guidance to automakers to help them develop electronic devices that provide features consumers want – without disrupting a driver's attention or sacrificing safety."

The announcement comes during the Chicago Auto Show, where many car makers are showcasing exactly the sort of new technology covered by the guidelines. The auto show also features seminars and classes, including a class helping women learn about auto financing.
